Help your Child to Read and Write Part 1: Free Online Course
This course gives a good insight into the Sounds-Write program at the beginning stages of learning to read and write. Teaching your child to read is a partnership between us and the parents. At The Alphabet Cracker we fully support you in every step of your child learning to read, write and spell.
Initial Code App
The Initial Code App, developed by Sounds-Write, aligns with the Sounds-Write program. It is great for practising the Sounds-Write lessons at home. The first three units are free.
Sounds of English
Australia
Listen to speech pathologist,
Alison Clarke,
demonstrate the sounds of English.
United Kingdom
Children from St Thomas Aquinas School UK,
using the Sounds-Write program,
demonstrate correct pronunciation of
English sounds without an added 'uh'.
New Zealand
Speech Patholigist Emma Nahna demonstrates the sounds of New Zealand English. She gives a good explanation of the schwa sound 'uh'.
Fluency
Repeated readings of books sent home by The Alphabet Cracker
helps to develop fluency. Select a section of the book and have the reader read it three times, providing corrective feedback as you go.
Spaced Review
'Spaced review doubles the speed of learning'(Dylan Williams 2008)Practising skills between tutoring sessions is key to success. Three practice sessions of 20 mins over the week is more effective than 1 practice for 60 mins. At the Alphabet Cracker we program the spaced practice between sessions to suit the individual's and family's needs.
Reading Aloud and Decodeable Books
'Forming letter-sound connections between spellings and pronunciations is the mechanism explaining how beginners learn to read words from memory.'
