Vicki has always been fascinated with how children 'pull the words off the page.' After much frustration and inadequate answers from undergraduate and post-graduate education courses, she was finally able to tackle the issue of how children learn to read. Through her masters degree, focused on dyslexia, she was able to look outside the field of education to the cognitive and psychological sciences and find answers.
The Alphabet Cracker uses programs and approaches that have a strong evidence-base backed by many years of research. Sounds-Write is a linguistic systematic synthetic phonics program that works from speech to print. We take an explicit approach to teaching literacy that is indvidualised for the learner. The cognitive load is adjusted to suit working memory capacity, and spaced and interleaved practice is provided to ensure learning is secured into long term memory. Through these practices, learners can ‘pull the words off the page’ and develop into confident readers, spellers and writers.
